Creepy Wednesday: The Creepypasta Starter Guide (Creepypasta for beginners)

First things first, do not use this page as a guide. It is a pile of bull that ranks Jeff the Killer in first. This has been a public service announcement.

Creepypasta.com, official home of Creepypasta, has an excellent compilation of starter pastas. You can click here to go to their suggested reading page.

I would recommend that those new to creepypasta start with a classic, for example PsychosisThe Russian Sleep Experiment, or maybe Candle Cove. Psychosis would be great for those who prefer longer works, while Candle Cove is an undisputed chiller. I definitely believe that those new to Creepypasta should dive head first into the "genre" as opposed to taking it slow and approaching it by starting with lukewarm fics. The three I listed earlier are high up on the horror, gore, and creepy factor, fics which have stood their ground with many seasoned pasta readers.

Other great starter pastas would include:

The Devil Game: Some find the ending questionable, but its still an engaging fic.

NoEnd House: I think that this pasta is a decent one, though some readers in the comments disagree. Watch out for the ending, which hit me like ice water.

Grocery List: A short, sweet one that is in the reader's POV.

Squidward's Suicide: I found this one dubious when I heard about it on various sites, but as it was considered a classic I finally cracked and read it. Surprisingly, despite all the Internet hype, this pasta stands up.

The Sandman: No relation to the pop-culture creature. This is a well written, haunting pasta.

These fics should pretty much set you up with the genre. After finishing these, you could start working on the Creepypasta suggested reading page (link near the beginning of the post) or head on over to the bottom of the creepypasta homepage and work your way through the top-rated pastas. I find that a lot of people start with ridiculous crappypastas and get turned off the genre by this.

Once you've had a bit more experience with the wonderful world of creepypasta you absolutely must check out. It is The Creepypasta Survival Guide, the one creeppasta that most people can find no fault with. However, under no circumstances should you read this pasta as a newbie! This pasta contains a lot of references that only those familiar with the respective creepypastas would catch, so don't ruin it for yourself.

Hope that this guide if helpful. Include your own recommendations in the comments.
